Social Experiment - Learning New Things About Myself

I realize that I haven't kept up my part of the bargain as far as blogging several times a week. I apologize for this. The last few weeks have been grueling, to say the least. That's no excuse though, and I will get started on what I am learning from the book, Secrets of Charm, written by John Powers and published in 1954. I've learned some things about myself that I'm a little bit surprised by. Sometimes social experiments can be, well, uncomfortable. I thought that I would fall right in line and step with this, but it hasn't always been that easy. In 1954, women(and often times men too), did not go anywhere without looking their best. I think that looking put together is always a good thing. I really do. That doesn't mean that I'm good at it though. Like I said in my previous post, I am a jeans and tee shirt girl. The first day that I decided to not be a jeans and tee shirt girl, I had to take my dog Lil'Bit to the vet. I decided that I would dress c...

Secrets of Charm - A Social Experiment

Do you ever feel like the world that we live in today is, I don't know, crass and somewhat uncivilized? That maybe the lines between men and women have been blurred, just slightly? (Trust me, I'm all for women's rights, equal pay, etc... but can't we still be women?) Maybe you just feel like you were meant to be born in a different time. If you have said yes to any of these questions then I am willing to bet that on some level, you and I are kindred spirits.  When I was growing up, my heroes were my Grandma, my Granny, my mom and my aunts. I've always liked the practicality of old time ways and sometimes, even the glamour of the 40's and 50's. Not that life was necessarily glamorous for any of the matriarchs in my family. They were farmers wives and daughters. Nothing glamorous about that. When they did fix up for company, church and other family outings though, they were gorgeous. In my eyes they were anyway. I've looked at pictures of one of my aunts...

Of Alfred Hitchcock and Silent Movies

I am admittedly not an Alfred Hitchcock fan.   I blame it on the movies The Birds and Psycho .  I know that they are both  classics, but really, what kind of mind thinks up something as odd and demented as a town being violently attacked by a bunch of black birds?  Or, a guy who takes orders from his dead mother?  Seriously.  I am also not a big fan of silent movies.  Well, actually, I have never sat through and watched a silent movie.  I've only seen snippets here and there.  Those snippets did not entice me at all.  I find that the facial expressions of the characters are cheesy, and while I am not  a grand conversationalist myself, I still prefer to hear my entertainment, instead of reading expressions.  Regardless of all of the above , the film that I am about to review is not only an Alfred Hitchcock movie, but a silent one at that.  The film's name is The Lodger .  It was released in 1927 and was o...

Music, Music, Music!

A few years ago (maybe 3 or 4), one of my best friends and I had a standing, weekly date with Spin Street.  Spin Street is a music & movie store.  Memphians will probably remember it as a former Goldsmith's Department Store, many years ago.  Spin Street has cd's, of course, but also, a lot of vinyl as well.  Anyway, back to the story at hand.  Spin Street used to have a couple of rows of used or hard to "sell" cd's.  They ranged in price from $1-$5.  Best friend and I would comb through the cd's and look for anything that looked unusually good, even if we had never heard of the artist.  Anyway, we did this for several months and probably spent much more money than we should have on music.  We had a great time, though.  And the sales staff got to know us pretty well.  So, I came up with a somewhat brilliant idea.  I am going to listen to every single cd that I bought from Spin Street and do a review of them, right here, on ...

Random 1st Blog in 3yrs. Ramblings

Today is the first time that I have blogged since 2010.  So, yeah, it's been a while.  We'll see if we can make a go of it this time. So, here I am, writing a blog and watching HG TV's Extreme Homes.  While I'm not totally against having an extreme home, at this point, I just want an organized home.  I am a random person with a short attention span.  My personal experience is that those of us who are random with short attention spans have a very difficult time keeping up with things.  Things like a toothbrush, tax returns, and the time.  I have read many books on organizing and homemaking.  They were fun to read, but not terribly helpful.  Why?  Because the people who wrote these books are born organized and don't understand why people like me can see a sock on the floor and walk over it for an entire week before I pick it up.  To be honest, I don't understand it either.  It makes perfect, common sense to pick...
